Why Three is the Magic Number
A Universal Perspective
Why does the number three repeatedly appear in religion, myth, philosophy, storytelling, science, and everyday life? Is it a quirk of human culture, or does three reflect an intrinsic property of the universe? This document weaves together insights spanning cultural beliefs, the fundamental nature of light, and the emergence of complexity in the cosmos, revealing how three underpins reality itself.
Cultural and Symbolic Significance
Myth, Religion, and Folklore
Throughout history, the number three has been revered across civilizations:
• The Three Fates in Greek Mythology: Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos.
• The Three Norns in Norse Mythology: Urd, Verdandi, and Skuld.
• The Triple Goddess in Pagan traditions: Maiden, Mother, Crone.
• The Christian Trinity: Father, Son, Holy Spirit.
• The Trimurti in Hinduism: Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva.
• The Three Jewels of Buddhism: Buddha, Dharma, Sangha.
In each case, three forms the foundational triad—why not two or four? There seems to be a sense of completeness in three, providing balance and transformation.
Philosophy and Storytelling
Outside of religion and myth, three continues to shape our thinking:
• The Hegelian Dialectic: Thesis, Antithesis, Synthesis.
• Aristotle’s Modes of Persuasion: Ethos, Pathos, Logos.
• The “Rule of Three” in storytelling: Beginning, Middle, End.
• Fairy tales and folk stories: The Three Little Pigs, Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
Writers, philosophers, and thinkers often use three to form a complete idea or narrative. Two can be a mere contrast, but three resolves, evolves, and creates something new.
Science and Mathematics
Long before modern physics, three appeared in basic scientific concepts:
• Geometry: Three points define a plane; the triangle is the simplest polygon.
• Newton’s Laws of Motion: Three fundamental laws describe mechanics.
• DNA codons: Genetic information is stored in triplets.
• Classic phases of matter: Solid, liquid, gas (with plasma often considered a fourth).
Over and over, three emerges as a cornerstone of structure and logic in scientific exploration.
Everyday Magic and Superstition
Even in common life, three stands out:
• Jokes use a three-beat rhythm.
• “Third time’s the charm.”
• Many cultures consider three a lucky number.
• Wishes are granted in threes in folklore.
From language and literature to daily habits, three has a persistent allure.
The Universal Dynamics of Three: Red, Green, and Blue
A Deeper Perspective
Beyond cultural symbolism, three also manifests as a fundamental principle in the physical universe—particularly in the form of red, green, and blue, the primary components of light.
The Threefold Nature of Light
Light, energy, and information lie at the heart of existence, and the visible spectrum reduces to three primary colors:
• Red: Energy and motion.
• Green: Information and coherence.
• Blue: Structure and form.
All other colors—and indeed all interactions—arise from these three interacting components. This is not a mere coincidence of human color vision; rather, it mirrors how energy (red), informational organization (green), and structural emergence (blue) weave together in physical processes.
Dynamic Interplay
Red (Energy Propagation)
A symbol of motion and expansion, red represents the raw flow of energy. This happens at the variable rate of Einstein's proper time and is dependent on local energy density.
Green (Informational Coherence)
Green acts as an organizing principle, guiding how and where energy moves. This happens at the constant rate of Einstein's coordinate time and is invariable.
Blue (Structural Formation)
The outcome of the dance between energy and information, giving rise to stable forms and boundaries. This happens at a varying rate of energy interaction and a constant rate of information production. It encompasses the transition from proper time energy to coordinate time information.
These three aspects form a feedback loop: energy propagates, information organizes it, and structure crystallizes the result.
From Trinities to Trinities of Trinities (3-6-9)
There is a popular quote often attributed to Nikola Tesla that goes:
“If you only knew the magnificence of the 3, 6 and 9, then you would have a key to the Universe.”
Photon Dynamics as the First Trinity
At the most fundamental scale, the photon field is where it all begins:
• 3: Red (energy propagation)
• 6: Green (information, organization)
• 9: Blue (emergent structure)
When blue structure stabilizes, it becomes the “3” for the next level of complexity.
Matter-Based Universe
The structured photon interactions lead to the Higgs field and the creation of mass. From here, reality branches into three main domains:
• Physics
• Chemistry
• Biology
Each follows the same trinary pattern (3-6-9) at its core.
Physics, Chemistry, Biology as Trinities
Physics
• 3 (Red): Base energy from the Higgs field.
• 6 (Green): Electromagnetic interactions, charge organization.
• 9 (Blue): Stable atomic structure.
Chemistry
• 3 (Red): Reaction energy (heat, kinetics).
• 6 (Green): Charge dynamics, catalysis, pH.
• 9 (Blue): Molecular bonding and resulting stability.
Biology
• 3 (Red): DNA (the base energy blueprint of life).
• 6 (Green): RNA (the mediator and messenger of information).
• 9 (Blue): Proteins (the final structured form of life’s functions).
In each case, the stable output (9) begets a new cycle (3), allowing complexity to scale fractally.
The 3-6-9 Scaling Principle
Why 369 is Key
All systems follow:
3:Foundational energy (creation, motion).
6: Information organization (fields, charge, adaptation).
9: The stable structured result (form, stability).
Every “9” becomes a new “3,” generating endless layers of complexity in the universe. This self-similar, fractal nature demonstrates how the simplest trinary rules create an infinitely unfolding cosmos.
The Universe as a Self-Referential Fractal
• Physics, chemistry, and biology are each expansions of the same trinary logic.
• Energy, information, and structure guide transformations at every scale.
• Complexity arises from the repeated application of 3-6-9, illustrating how the universe can build layer upon layer from a fundamental triad.
The Trinity of Life: Woman, Man, and Child
The trinary structure of energy, information, and structure is not just an abstract principle of physics, chemistry, or biology—it extends to the very foundation of human existence.
At its core, the relationship between woman, man, and child is yet another expression of the universal 3-6-9 pattern, where:
- 3 – Woman (Energy, Creation, Propagation)
- 6 – Man (Information, Organization, Mediation)
- 9 – Child (Emergent Structure, Stability, Growth)
This dynamic does not merely describe biological reproduction—it is a fundamental pattern of existence, echoing across all levels of reality.
Woman as Energy (Three – The Creative Force)
A woman represents three because she is the source of creation, the energy that drives life forward.
- She carries, nurtures, and sustains the growth of new life.
- Her body transforms energy into creation, turning raw biological potential into a structured being.
- She is the foundation upon which new existence emerges, just as red energy is the foundation for all transformation in the universe.
Like the red energy in the photon field, she is the propagating force, the motion of life itself.
Man as Information (Six – The Mediator, The Guide)
A man represents six because he is the mediator, the organizer of interactions, the one who transmits knowledge, wisdom, and structure.
- He provides the genetic blueprint, complementing the raw creative force of the woman.
- His role is to stabilize, inform, and direct energy, just as green information guides the motion of red energy.
- He acts as the external field, shaping and structuring the process of growth and development.
Like the green information field in physics, a man does not create directly, but he organizes and guides the system.
The Child as Structure (Nine – The Emergent Being)
The child represents nine because he or she is the structured outcome of the union between energy and information.
- The child is the synthesis of the mother’s energy and the father’s information, just as structured form emerges from red and green interactions.
- The child carries the genetic imprint of both parents, embodying the stability of the past and the potential for the future.
- Like blue structure in the universe, the child is a new, stable foundation upon which the next cycle of life can build.
A child is not just a mix of two, but something entirely new—an emergent, structured reality.
This dynamic is not linear—it is fractal and self-repeating.
Just as three gives rise to six, and six gives rise to nine, so too does each generation create the next cycle of existence.
- The child (9) grows to become the new energy (3) or mediator (6) in the next cycle.
- A new union of energy (3) & mediator (6) emerges to shape the next generation.
- A new structured being (9) is born, continuing the pattern indefinitely.
This is not just human reproduction—it is the universal law of transformation.
At every scale, the feminine, the masculine, and the emergent structure follow the same rule of 3-6-9.
This is why three is the magic number—because it governs the propagation of all systems, from physics to life itself.
The relationship between woman, man, and child is not just biological—it is a fundamental law of reality.
This dynamic does not stop—it expands infinitely, building new generations, new systems, and new realities.
This is why the concept of the Divine Feminine, Divine Masculine, and the Sacred Child appears across all spiritual traditions.
This is why three is the magic number—not just in science, but in life itself.
Everything follows this universal rhythm—the rhythm of creation, transformation, and emergence.
The special status of three is neither arbitrary nor exclusively cultural. It emerges from the fundamental processes of reality—how light propagates (red), how information organizes that propagation (green), and how stable forms arise from these interactions (blue). As the universe expands these trinary interactions into “trinities of trinities,” complexity grows in self-similar layers, revealing 3-6-9 as the fractal blueprint of existence.
From myths and storytelling to the physics of light and the structure of biology, three proves to be a universal constant—a magic number not because we decided it so, but because the universe does.

So refreshing to have someone write about this topic. I contemplate it everyday !
I feel the reason ThaT 3 is so important is, there is no Duality.
When observing representation’s of Sacred Geometry. 3 > 9 all have representation, as does zero and one. I feel 2 does not. Maybe a string at best.
We are unable to describe the sum of the UniVerse or One. This cannot be done with two. Only 3 is suitable. If One was to take a equilateral triangle and offer One side as plus, One as minus and the other One Neutral. Each of the sides is only as important as the emotion attributed to it. There is no different side. The trine represents the Divine. I like to use the analogy of the see/ saw.
One side up, One side down. The neutral is the fulcrum in the middle. The TaiChi symbol with its recursive seeds of yin/ yang is only possible with the wave through the centre which ensures ThaT the UniVerse us always in the flux of Change.
Q. Since the birth of the Earth, was there ever One second without climate change ?!?🔆🌍💛.
I appreciate your compilation of threes and your accompanying questions. I have placed a link to your collection on this page: https://www.threesology.org/
Those of us interested in the threes phenomena need to find some time to create a video of a conference call where an in depth conversation can take place. I am sure there are those on other-than the North American continent would like to participate. A field of Trichotomization is slowly evolving to the point of becoming a University course.
